Oil & Water Sensory Bag Activity

Step-by-step guide to making:

Oil & Water Sensory Bag

Non-Messy

For those who don’t like the feeling of mess or wetness - this sensory bag is a wonderful option for feeling the squidge without getting mucky! Fill your bag and prod and poke to create blobs of different shapes and sizes.

What You’ll Need:

  • Baby oil

  • Blue food colouring (water based)

  • Sealable bag

  • Duct tape (for extra safety in sealing)

  • Towels (to help catch any spills whilst making the bag)

How to make your Oil & Water Sensory Bag:

Step 1

Set up - get out everything you need and lay out your towel. Even though this is our non-messy option, the making process can get a little messy if you spill the oil so be careful!

Step 2

Fill your sealable bag with baby oil - open your bag and pour in your baby oil, you’ll want there to be a good amount in there so fill it until it’s about half full.

Step 3

Pour in your blue drops - drop in some blue food colouring. Your food colouring should be water-based so it will stay separate from the oil in the bag and form little blue bubbles or blobs in the oil. Drop it in little by little so you can judge when there is enough in there!

Step 4

Seal your bag - the trick here is to squeeze out as much air as possible when sealing your bag. I press it up against me (carefully so I don’t get covered in baby oil) and then seal. Once it’s sealed and you’re happy with how it looks, seal it extra well with some duct tape. It just makes it extra safe against any accidental spills from the bag unsealing.

Step 5

Explore - explore the bag by squidging and pressing the bag to make different shapes and break up the little blue blobs. You can even give it a shake to create lots of little blobs like falling rain. You can even try taping the bag to a window so you can see the sunlight coming through the bag or you can tape it to the bath for some bath time fun. Press play on our Sensory Sounds Water song for en even more theatrical experience at home and even sing along!
