Carbon Theatre is committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about what information we hold about you. We want you to be confident that we are using your data responsibly and you can tell us to stop using your data whenever and if you want to. 

The purpose of this policy is to give you a clear explanation about how we collect your personal data, how we keep it secure and how we use the information we collect from you.

Carbon Theatre’s activities are run through Carbon Theatre & Cultural Projects Ltd., a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee incorporated in England and Wales (Company number 11332256). Carbon Theatre is the Data Controller of your personal information.

We will ensure your personal information is used and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998), the Privacy Electronic Communication Regulations (2003) and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations EU 2016/679).

This policy may change as we update and develop our activities and projects - it was last updated on 8 April 2021. Updates will be posted to this page on our website and we may inform you of changes by email where appropriate.

How we use your information

We collect your email address via the sign-up form our website, or via paper feedback forms where you have opted in to receive updates from us via email. We only hold email addresses in our database for people who have previously opted in to be contacted by us regarding the following:

  • General announcements about Carbon Theatre as an organisation

  • Announcements specific to a project or piece of work that Carbon Theatre is making

  • Opportunities to get involved with the work that Carbon Theatre is doing

How we collect information

In addition to marketing communications, we also process personal information in the following ways that are within our legitimate organisational interests:

  • We may analyse data we hold about you to ensure that the content and timing of communications that we send you are as relevant to you as possible.

  • We may analyse data we hold about you in order to identify and prevent fraud.

  • We may analyse anonymised data to learn about audience behaviour within our work and use this information to inform future works.

  • In order to improve our website, we may analyse information about how you use it and the content that you interact with.

We may also use publicly available information about you from sources such as public registers, online (including records that you have made public on social media) or the electoral roll. This information helps us to communicate with you in a relevant way, in particular when we are approaching you about potential philanthropic support. This enables us to raise funds sooner and in a more tailored way than we otherwise would.

Marketing

We aim to communicate with you about the work that we do in ways that you find relevant, timely and respectful. For email communications, we use your opt-in consent to be contacted in this way as a legal basis (for example, when you join our mailing list on our website). We will give you an opportunity to opt out of receiving our email communications every time we contact you. Alternatively you can use the contact details at the end of this policy to let us know if you no longer wish to hear from us.

Third Parties

Under no circumstances will we ever sell personal data to anyone. There are certain circumstances under which we may disclose your personal information to third parties. These are as follows:

  • To our own service providers who process data on our behalf and on our instructions (for example our ticketing system software provider). In these cases we require that these third parties comply strictly with our instructions and with data protection laws, for example around security of personal data. Where we are under a duty to disclose your personal information in order to comply with any legal obligation (for example to government bodies and law enforcement agencies).

  • We may share reports about audience behaviour within our projects in anonymised form with our commissioners, partners and general audiences to share industry learning and best practice. Such reports will use anonymised data only.

Google Analytics

Carbon Theatre’s website uses Google Analytics cookies to track anonymous usage statistics and does not collect any personal information that can be used to identify you. This data helps us analyse webpage usage and improve our website in order to tailor it to our audience needs. Google Analytics stores information about what pages you visit, how long you are on the site, how you got there and what you clicked on.

Vimeo & YouTube

We use Vimeo and YouTube for providing video videos across the website and within our Discover section. Vimeo may capture some personal information which may stay active for a number of years.
